Thin film analyser TFA-1

Formation of microscopic foam and emulsion films, observation of their behaviour and measurements of several physicochemical parameters

Principle is based on the well known Thin Liquid Film – Pressure Balance Technique. Microscopic foam and emulsion films are obtained in a modified Scheludko-Exerowa cell, especially designed for best compatibility within the compact architecture of this instrument. The film thickness is measured interferometrically. The instrument is equipped with a digital camera and allows simultaneous observation of the film and measurement of its thickness, both controlled by a modern Windows software.

Instrumental parts

Zeiss inverse microscope AXIO Observer.A1m equipped with a digital camera and monochromatic light source
Hamamatsu H5784-01 photo sensor module
Temperature controlled measuring cell in two modifications allowing:
i) formation of a film at constant capillary pressure
ii) application of external pressure on the film
Pressure control unit

Features of the instrument

Investigations on foam and emulsion film properties both under dynamic (film drainage, critical film thickness of rupture, film lifetime etc.) and equilibrium (film thickness and disjoining pressure, film lifetime etc.) conditions
Simultaneous measurements of film thickness and disjoining pressure yields the disjoining pressure isotherm
Temperature controlled measuring cell
Image analysis of the video data (e.g. evaluation of film contact angle, for instance via the topographic or film expansion method)
